The UN Global Sustainability Goals

In 2015, world leaders agreed came together to agree to 17 Global Goals that would seek to tackle some of the biggest issues facing the planet and those that live on it today. The goals, laid out below, cover issues such as ending poverty, fighting inequality and tackling climate change. More and more brands and businesses are seeking to align themselves to the goals in order to unite in one common cause (goal 17).

No one person, brand, government or organisation can do everything, but at Leo’s Box we believe everyone can do something. This is something the goals lay out so clearly – they’re all issues that need tackling, but by choosing a few of the goals and focusing your energy on those, collectively we can make a real difference.

It’s a bit like swiss cheese. One slice has holes all the way through it. However, when you stack multiple slices, one on top of the other, the result is a solid block with no holes that penetrate right the way through. Stronger together.

So, too, do we have the responsibility to add our slice of cheese to the block.

At Leo’s Box we’ve chosen three goals to align ourselves most closely with. There are others that we love, and many more we want to help with, but by choosing three we know we can put in all our efforts to achieving what we can.

The goals are:
Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
Our planet has provided us with an abundance of natural resources. But we have not utilized them responsibly and currently consume far beyond what our planet can provide. We must learn how to use and produce in sustainable ways that will reverse the harm that we have inflicted on the planet.

Specifically
12.2 – Sustainable management and use of natural resources
12.5 – Substantially reduce waste generation
12.6 – Encourage companies to adopt sustainable practices and sustainability reporting
12.8 – Promote universal understanding of sustainable lifestyles
And most of all: remove market distortions that encourage wasteful consumption

Goal 13: Climate Action
Climate change is a real and undeniable threat to our entire civilization. The effects are already visible and will be catastrophic unless we act now. Through education, innovation and adherence to our climate commitments, we can make the necessary changes to protect the planet. These changes also provide huge opportunities to modernize our infrastructure which will create new jobs and promote greater prosperity across the globe.

Specifically
13.3 – Build knowledge and capacity to meet climate change

Goal 14: Life Below Water
Healthy oceans and seas are essential to our existence. They cover 70 percent of our planet and we rely on them for food, energy and water. Yet, we have managed to do tremendous damage to these precious resources. We must protect them by eliminating pollution and overfishing and immediately start to responsibly manage and protect all marine life around the world.

Specifically
14.1 – Reduce marine pollution
14.2 – Protect and restore ecosystems

These may seem overwhelming and complex, and in many ways they are. But as a brand we have a duty to align ourselves with these goals in order to reach climate targets by 2030. And more than just our duty, we want to help provide options to our customers that don’t compromise the achievability of these goals worldwide. But for that, we need your help!
We may be small, but with the swiss cheese model we don’t need to be big. If we can encourage and support each and every one of you to shop more sustainably, and you can share with your friends to do the same, then we become like one big solid block of swiss cheese – all individually flawed, but stronger together.
If you enjoyed this post please do share it, and let us know which Global Goals you’d like to align yourself with!
